You Are Here
Date: April 2022
Role: Interaction design, graphic design, multimedia design
Where is here? In my own life experience, here has always been a place of in-between: different countries, identities, languages, cultures… During my transitions from Kyrgyzstan to Taiwan to the US, I’ve experienced both sorrow and excitement, grief and joy.
Change starts with saying goodbye. Then you move and enter a new space. You’ll miss what was familiar but that’s ok. Give it space, and before you know it, you arrive at the hello.
You Are Here invites you to walk through these five stages of transition, reflect, and share your own story. By inviting you into the narrative of those around you, I hope that you will find you are not as alone as you think you are.
-
Saying goodbye never really gets easier,
no matter how many times you do it. -
The thing I hate most about moving is the packing.
How do you decide what is worth bringing with you? -
The adjustment period after entering into a new space is a bit like trying to pin your location on a map that keeps on shifting. It can be disorienting trying to fit in when you’re not really sure who you are in this new context.
-
Ever since we first started traveling together as a family, my mom has been mailing a postcard back to me from the location we visited. I’ve started mailing a postcard back to myself while traveling too.
I wish that I could regularly receive my memories in the mail and put them up on the wall. It would help with the missing. -
Finally getting to the stage where you are ready to introduce yourself is a huge deal!
It takes courage to say hello.
I’m happy you’re here.
